Choosing tyres has been made easier by compulsory performance labelling, but if you want the full picture on the top tyres to buy, you need this test.

Since 2012, tyre makers have had to test their products for wet grip, rolling resistance (key to fuel economy) and pass-by noise to set criteria, then publish the results in easy-to-grasp labels similar to those seen on fridges and washing machines. Yet here at Auto Express, we look at nine criteria, not three, including the more relevant cabin noise, and show results to a percentage point rather than the labels’ broad bands.

While research shows UK drivers have paid less attention to labels than European motorists, they’ve had a huge impact on the industry. Our 2014 test is proof; we last rated the big-selling 205/55R16 size, found on many medium-sized family hatches and saloons, in 2012, and this year there’s a host of new designs. Also new in 2014 is our proving ground, Applus IDIADA near Barcelona in Spain, where we headed with the help of Hankook – one of several manufacturers that develop their tyres there.

Auto Express drivers carried out all the tests apart from those requiring specialist skills, like aquaplaning. Proving ground staff did the cabin noise test and rolling resistance was measured at Hankook’s Korean R&D base. And all tyres were bought in the wholesale market after makers nominated their most suitable model to ensure what we test is what you can buy.

So after hundreds of laps and emergency stops, which is the tyre you should choose?

All tyres were the popular 205/55R16 size, with a weight rating (load index) of 91 or 94 and speed ratings of V (up to 150mph) or W (up to 168mph). Tyre label ratings are measured from A (best) to G (worst) on rolling resistance (RR) and wet grip (WG), with pass-by noise (N) in dB – the lower the better.

2015 Mercedes-AMG GT

2015 Mercedes-AMG GTsexy

Mercedes will likely not run out of models to give “Edition 1″ labels to. The German automaker continues to build new models, so naturally, more Edition 1 models are expected to come out of the woodwork, too. Now, Autocar is reporting that Mercedes is actually bringing a new Edition 1 model to the 2014 Paris Motor Show. But this isn’t your usual Edition 1 model; this is the Mercedes-AMG GT Edition 1. Business is about to pick up, ladies and gentlemen.

Mercedes has yet to reveal details surrounding the Mercedes-AMG GT Edition 1. Fortunately, Autocar was able to get its hands on some photos of what looks like the AMG Edition 1. One thing I can tell you is that this model looks a little different from the GT and GT S models we all saw earlier this in September. Take a closer look and you’ll notice a lot of carbon-fiber additions, particularly on the front air ducts, and the lower outer edges of the front bumper.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Edition 1 also reportedly comes with a prominent fixed rear wing and a set of 10-spoke alloy wheels. I counted myself and yes, those wheels have 10 spokes on them.

I’m not expecting the GT Edition 1 to come with an engine upgrade because none of the Edition 1 models before it came with one. That’s okay, because the AMG GT still packs a 4.0-liter, twin-turbo, V-8 engine that produces an impressive 510 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. That’s enough to propel the sports car from 0 to 60 mph in about 3.9 seconds to go with a top speed of 189 mph.

2015 Saleen 302 Mustang

Steve Saleen has made good use of his time since regaining his namesake brand in 2012. The timing couldn’t have been any more ideal too, because a little over a year after returning to Saleen , the all-new Ford Mustang made its debut. Yep, sometimes, timing is everything.

The aftermarket company known for building sick specialized Mustangs has prepared its first interpretation of the new Ford muscle car . It’s predictably called the 2015 Saleen 302 Mustang and like its predecessors, and it’s sure to have all of the familiar high-performance modifications that Saleen has come to be known for.

The full scope of details haven’t been released as of 7/3/2014 and we only get a teaser photo to look at, plus an accompanying video. But make no mistake, a lot of the technical components are there for the new Saleen 302, including what we expect to be a robust performance tune that adds even more power to the Mustang’s already gnarly 5.0-liter, V-8 engine.

Without knowing how Saleen reinvented the Mustang into the 302, a look at the front section photo suggests that Mustang was given the full Saleen treatment, including improvements to its aesthetic and aerodynamic qualities. The vented hood now has a scoop, something the standard Mustang doesn’t have. Moreover, the headlights appear to have been cut in favor of a longer front grille. Even the lower bumper is restyled to include visible intakes and what appears to be slit-like indicators.

We expect Saleen to divulge more details soon. For now, enjoy the photo and the video. Let your imagination do the rest.

Updated 09/18/2014: Saleen announced that the all-new 2015 302 Mustang will make its world debut Saturday, September 20, 2014 during the Annual Saleen Show. Stay tuned for more details.

The world’s most popular roadster, the Mazda MX-5, has a whole new look. After 25 years and over 947,00 sales worldwide, the new fourth-generation 2014 Mazda MX-5 (known as the Mazda Miata in the US) has finally been revealed. Shorter, lower and wider than the current model, the new drop top has shed over 100kg in weight and will debut at the Paris Motor Show next month.

The MX-5 will go on sale in the UK early in 2015 at a starting price expected to be in the region of £20,000, that’s similar to the outgoing car.

Engines options remain unconfirmed at this stage but we understand 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre petrol engines featuring the latest SKYACTIV technology will be offered – developing around 130bhp and 165bhp respectively. We do know a six-speed manual gearbox will fitted as standard, with an auto available as an option.

Rumors have also been circulating that Mazda is considering fitting the MX-5 with a diesel engine for the first time, but as yet nothing has been confirmed. It’s a similar situation with a potent high-performance version of the MX-5, however, Mazda’s primary focus at the moment revolves around weight saving and reducing CO2 emissions.

2015 Lexus RC F

The Lexus IS dates back to 1998, when it was introduced as an entry-level luxury car mainly in Japan and the United States. Initially launched as a four-door sedan and five-door wagon , the IS didn’t receive a two-door version until the second-generation model came in 2006. However, the Japanese only built a convertible , postponing the coupe for a few more years. The much-anticipated coupe has finally arrived for the 2015 model year, about 12 months after Lexus unveiled the third-generation IS. But unlike the latter, the coupe carries the RC F nameplate.

Lexus is launching the 2015 RC F sports coupe in late October in the US market. Media and Lexus trainers are driving the car this week across the country on road and track to gain a full understanding of Lexus rear-drive, V8 powered sports GT. Our wheel time is Wednesday. Even without the drive we already know a few things about the car that are of interest.
Although this car is not intended as a direct, head-to-head competitor to the awesome BMW M4, we can draw some comparisons and contrasts to that car. BMW has moved from a V8 to a smaller, turbocharged in-line 6-cylinder engine. Lexus by contrast will use its powerful 5.0-liter V8 engine which is capable of operating on both the Otto and Atkinson combustion cycles. The Lexus engine is more powerful by 42 horsepower. It has 467. The BMW 425.

Citroen Divine DS

Citroen Divine DS

Citroen Divine DS

Citroen has unveiled a new DS concept car and it’s a bit mad. Called the Divine DS, it’s the size of a C4 but carries no Citroen badging. At all. The DS brand is doing rather well at the moment, so it appears to be an attempt to capitalise upon that…

So what is the Divine made up of? The chuffing fast 1.6-litre turbocharged engine from the new Peugeot RCZ R sits under the bonnet of what otherwise appears to be half car, half expensive bauble. Developing 270bhp and 244lb ft of torque, the Divine should certainly be lively to drive.

New Divine DS

Aside from the engine, a particular French type of concept madness abounds. The roof has been designed to resemble ‘the scales of a reptile’. The craziness doesn’t end there: its a mixture of opaque and transparent surfaces are intended to play with light, while there’s not actually a rear window.

The effect continues at the front, with a grille made up of ‘floating’ diamond-shaped pieces of chrome which supposedly reflect light. While it all sounds a bit mad, we actually think the Divine looks rather good, and a lot more interesting than the DS4, a car whose replacement it potentially previews.

Citroen DS

The madness of the exterior gives way to full-blown lunacy once you’ve opened the doors. ‘Hyper-typage’ is Citroen’s addition to the ever-expanding dictionary of annoying concept words, and refers to the bewildering array of customisation options available. Three ‘dress codes’ (yes, really) for the dashboard and doors are named ‘Mâle’, ‘Parisian Chic’ and ‘Fatale Punk’.

The former uses carbon fibre alongside glazed and burnished leather to give a supposedly ‘highly masculine’ ambience. The second adds silk, satin and beads to the mix, lowering the testosterone levels somewhat. Fatale Punk claims to be the most glamorous, incorporating ‘millions’ of tiny crystals, courtesy of Swarovski.

New Citroen Divine DS

What else is strange? Well, the dashboard is modelled on a backbone. It folds in half on itself as it slips down into a golden console. Cut stones and gold flecks continue the Divine’s ongoing theme of Versace let loose in an Parisian breaker’s yard.

And you don’t actually have a rear window. A 10.4-inch touchscreen doubles as the driver interface and a rear-view camera. The DS also has new-fangled laser headlights and holographic head-up display.

We’ll see it in the flesh at the Paris motor show early next month. Beautiful outside, bonkers inside. Which bits of the Divine DS should Citroen actually put into production?

CITROEN JE otkrio javnosti da će na pariškom autoshowu u listopadu predstaviti koncept Divine DS, “avangardnog dizajna”, kako je naveo Yves Bonnefont, glavni direktor za brand DS.

BMW E30, Second generation, 1982–1991, BMW kockica

The E30 was sold from 1982 through 1991 in coupe form, 1983 through 1991 in saloon form, and through 1993 in convertible form. Four-cylinder and six-cylinder petrol engines were used, with a six-cylinder diesel added in 1985. In 1986, the first all-wheel drive 3-series was produced, called the 325iX. The E30’s introductory price was nearly double that of the E21 just seven years earlier.[citation needed]

Initially released as a two-door coupe, the four-door saloon body style was added to the 3-series lineup in September 1983. In 1986, the station wagon (“touring”) body style became available.

The first BMW M3 was the E30 M3 coupe, which was released in 1987 and uses the S14 four-cylinder engine.
The E30 3-series was penned by Claus Luthe in 1978, the designer of the NSU Ro 80.[3] It was produced as four and two door (often referred to as a “coupe”) saloons, two-door convertible (the M3 cabriolet was only offered for the European market), cabriolet by Baur and five-door estate (marketed as the “touring”)

The BMW M3 utilised a widened and heavily redesigned variation of the 2-door body style. The M3 shares few body parts with other E30 models;[4] however, many M3 parts can be used on the other body styles and are interchangeable offering the consumer an OEM upgrade.

Following on from the E21, at the launch of the E30 range in 1982 it was fitted with M10 straight-4 and M20 straight-6 engines.[8] Over the production run, the M10 was replaced with the M40 and M42, the M20 received various upgrades and the BMW S14 engine was introduced in the M3.

At the launch of the E30 range in 1982, the 316 used a 1,766 cc M10 fed by a carburetor and producing 66 kW (90 PS; 89 hp), this engine allowed BMW to offer a cheap, entry-level car in the range. The 318i had the same M10 engine, but with Jetronic fuel injection, pushing power to 77 kW (105 PS; 103 hp) while also improving fuel economy.

The 1987 “Series 2″ update introduced a new four-cylinder SOHC engine, the 1,796 cc (M40B18) with 85 kW (116 PS; 114 hp). This engine incorporated Motronic fuel injection, hydraulic valves adjusters and a belt-driven cam. The 316 was replaced by the 316i, which used a 1,596 cc M40B16, producing 75 kW (102 PS; 101 hp). Not quite as torquey as the 66 kW (90 PS; 89 hp) 1,766 cc M10 it replaced. Nevertheless, it offered superior performance. In South Africa and perhaps some other markets, the old M10-powered 316 continued until 1991, gaining the new bumpers when the range was updated. The 316i model (and previous 316 model) was not sold in Australia, where the base model was the 318i.

The 318iS coupe was released in 1989, soon followed by the 318i sedan and 318iC convertible.[8] These models introduced a new engine, the chain-driven DOHC M42 1.8 L 16-valve engine w. This is the most modern engine available in the E30 range, incorporating the updated Bosch Motronic 1.3, hydraulic valve adjusters and four individual coil packs which resulted in a very high hp per liter as well as reasonable fuel economy (33mpg) and CO2 emissions (190 g/km). The excellent weight distribution of the 318iS has led to frequent comparisons with the famous E30 M3. Nicknames include “mini M3″ or “poor man’s M3.”

The M3 is powered by the BMW S14 engine, a high-revving motorsport engine.

At the launch of the E30 range, the 320i (2.0 L M20 with 92 kW (125 PS; 123 hp)) and 323i (2.3 L M20 with 105 kW (143 PS; 141 hp)) were available, both using Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection. These models were not sold in North America, presumably for emissions reasons. In 1985, the 323i was replaced with a 2.5 L version of the M20, which produced 126 kW (169 hp) and used Bosch Motronic fuel injection.[9] This engine was available in the 325i variants (including the all-wheel drive 325iX).

An economy version called the 325e (the e signifying efficiency) was released as a lower revving, more fuel efficient engine. To maximise low-rev torque, the engine was the largest available in the chassis (aside from the rare South African version which was available with the 3.3 L M30). The 2.7 L had a longer stroke than the 2.5 L, with a more restrictive head, four cam bearings instead of seven (less internal friction), and single valve springs where the 2.5l had doubled up springs. This resulted in 90 kW (122 PS; 121 hp) at 4250 rpm and, more importantly, 240 N·m (180 lb·ft) at 3250 rpm (peak torque for a 325i is 215 N·m (159 lb·ft) at 4000 rpm).

The 1987 “Series 2″ update boosted the 320i to 95 kW (129 PS; 127 hp) and the 325i to 126 kW (171 PS; 169 hp) and improved fuel economy.

The cockpit design of the E21 marked the introduction of a new design concept for BMW, with the center console angled towards the driver. This feature has become part of BMW’s interior design philosophy for many years.
